Annual Sports Day Event of Crystal Valley and Yellow Brick Road Nurseries

5th December 2019 is one of the most awaited day of our little game enthusiasts from Crystal Valley & Yellow Brick Road Nurseries as it's the time when they will showcase what they have prepared for their ever supportive parents.

Nursery children ages 3+ merrily boarded the "Yellow School Bus" whilst children ages below 3 years were accompanied by their parents to the venue, the Dubai Stars Sportsplex. Lots of conversation happened in the "Yellow School Bus"; some children saw duck cloud formations while others were simply amazed when they saw big airplanes about to land at the airport.

The combined Sports Day Event was officially opened by singing the UAE National Anthem followed by the warm up exercises. Nursery children were all set to start the fun games as their energy was boosted by the exercises. Our little ones from the baby room down to the young children raced their way to the different obstacle courses while being cheered by their proud mummy's and daddy's. Teamwork, coordination, sportsmanship were the core skill set developed. The event was wrapped up by gathering everyone to do calm down meditations and happy sing-along.

Thank you to all our dear Parents who took time out of their busy mornings to celebrate the Sports Day with their children. It was truly a memorable experience for everyone at the Nursery.

Arbour Day Celebration at Yellow Brick Road and Crystal Valley Nurseries

The first Arbor Day took place on the 10th of April 1872 in Nebraska, USA. The initiative laid foundation to encourage people to plant trees to increase awareness on the importance of planting trees. In years following that first Arbour Day, the community tree planting idea spread beyond the USA and in many other countries including Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, Yugoslavia, Iceland, India.

Since 2001, we have been celebrating Arbor Day at our Nurseries, by inviting our Nursery families to plant flowers, vegetables and fruits with your children into our Nursery Organic Gardens.

This year, with the help of our "Parent Gardening Committee 2019 - 2020", thoughts about gardening, experiences, revamping our garden beds and repainting and labeling of wooden planks were all accomplished. For this organic gardening season, we are growing cucumbers, carrots, pumpkins, watermelon, herbs, tomatoes, eggplant, corn, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, lettuce, sunflower and mustard.

Eating Out With Children, Yellow Brick Road and Crystal Valley Nurseries, Dubai, UAE

If you plan to eat out with children, make sure you decide where you are going to eat by choosing the restaurant carefully and come prepared. Listed below are some of the things to look out for when choosing a restaurant to go to with children.

The Food - is there more than fish fingers, pizzas and chips on the menu?  Try to choose a restaurant that offers a more healthy variety of children's meals like grilled chicken with veggie rice, spaghetti, vegetable lasagne, etc..

Does the children's food come first? You don't want to end up eating your food cold while you are busy trying to make sure your toddlers eat all their food first.

Are the children provided with some activities to keep them busy whilst waiting for their food?  Make sure you come prepared with your own materials to keep your children busy and distracted.  Books, crayons and play-dough are always good options.  If you are sitting outdoors, blowing bubbles are also a great especially if you are dining with babies and toddlers.

Are there high chairs available?  There is nothing worse than trying to feed a baby or toddler from a stroller; they need to be securely seated in a high chair that is at the same level as you are seated.

Are there baby changing facilities?  This is of course very important and practical.

Is there safe outdoor space?  If possible, try to choose a restaurant that has safe outdoor space to allow your children to run around and let off some steam.  Remember it is very difficult to get younger children to sit in the same place for a long period of time (more than 45 minutes).

And most importantly, try to go to a restaurant when the children have had their naps (if they still take morning naps), eaten a snack earlier and not when the toddlers are too hungry or tired.  This will help to make eating out with your children a more pleasant experience.

Nutrition For Toddlers @ Yellow Brick Road Nursery & Crystal Valley Nurseries, Dubai UAE

Children's nutritional needs increase proportionately along with their growth; the more the children grow, the more nutrients their bodies need. In order for these nutritional requirements to be met, sufficient amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals are to be included in their daily food intake.  Now is the perfect time to incorporate these good dietary practices.

KEY FOODS FOR TODDLERS

Base your child's intake on the following food groups to ensure they are getting all the important nutrients. Healthy prepared family food is the best option rather than pre-prepared toddler foods in the market. Make it a habit that your child receives the following food groups everyday:

Carbohydrates
Serve at least one kind of starchy carbohydrate such as bread, rice, pasta, noodles, cereals or potatoes. Too much of these fibre-rich carbohydrates for young children could inhibit the absorption of some minerals. As the toddlers grow older, gradually introduce them to higher fibre-carbohydrate foods i.e whole wheat pasta, brown or red rice and oats.

Fruits and Vegetables
Vegetables are a brilliant source of protein! About a handful in size be it fresh or fresh-frozen. Serve colourful fruits and vegetables before the main meal when children are most hungry. These foods contain essential nutrients important for the children's optimum health, growth and development. If you are having a hard time feeding your child with vegetables, then try to purée the vegetables to make soups, sauces, casseroles. Make it an effort to always dine every day together with your children so your children can follow you as a good positive example. Avocados are most often readily available and are also a 'super food' for providing excellent daily nutritional value.

Milk and dairy foods
Adding milk on cereals or in drinks, puddings and sauces is another option to ensure milk requirement is met. Prepare dairy products such as cheese, natural yoghurt and fromage frais to offer variations; these basically contain the same nutrients as fresh milk.

Meat, fish and alternatives
Meat and fish food group is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals and can be eaten once or twice a day. Nutrition experts recommend at least two servings of oil-rich fish such as tuna, mackerel, salmon, sardines as these types are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Have a variety of red meat (beef, mutton, lamb) and white meat (chicken, turkey) servings;  adding vegetables and beans/ lentils. Eggs are considered one of the 'super foods' as it contains little bit of almost every nutrient the body needs. Do add pulses and beans in their diet as these are good sources of iron and protein.

FOODS TO BE CAREFUL WITH
Avoid giving sugary processed 'artificial' foods which includes store bought packaged meals, sauces and spreads.  Always read the product labels and be sure the food items do not include tans-fats, palm and canola oils, extra added sugar, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colours, flavours, preservatives, stabilizers and enhances.  Is best to always avoid purchasing packaged food including processed cakes, biscuits, crisps, sweets and sweetened sugary drinks. Sugary foods also contribute to dental decay especially when eaten or drunk in between meal.  Always aim to provide real, whole, natural foods.

WATER
Water is still the best drink of choice.  Water hydrates the body, cleans the mouth and teeth, and is really the main drink choice that young children need.

Instilling healthy and nutritious diet practice during early childhood years is best to support the children's growth and development. Be a role model to your child by creating positive and healthy habits; it will definitely reap its rewards in the future for a healthy mind, body and soul.

Healthy Meal Planning for Children, Yellow Brick Road Nursery and Crystal Valley Nurseries, Dubai, UAE

Nursery children often seem too busy exploring the world to slow down and eat. Others may be fickle about food or refuse to eat what's served at mealtimes. Toddlers need about 1,000 to 1,200 calories a day, but often don't eat a lot at one sitting; that is where snacks come in.

Healthy, well-timed snacks can help balance out an uneven diet keeping them from getting hungry which leads to them being cranky. Preparing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein and calcium-rich foods boosts nutrient intake for toddlers.

Milk and milk-based drinks make very good choice since it is an excellent source of calcium and protein which helps in their bone development. Milk intake also aids in children's overall growth and development however, milk consumption should also depend on different factors such as age, height, weight and if a child may be lactose intolerant etc.

Raw fruit juices are another option since these are very nutritious, containing multivitamins and lots of fiber. Preparing freshly squeezed fruit juices at home gives an assurance that it is 100% healthy; no hidden sugar, flavourings and preservatives.

Children tend to get used to the same kind and appearance of foods. What better way to make mini-meal time amusing is to prepare the food choices in a 'Bento Box' - a container divided into sections for holding different small varieties of food. It is appealing to the eyes of children especially when different fruits or vegetables are cut in small portions. Biscuit cutters in different forms can also be used when cutting sandwiches or cheese. This type of meal preparation is packed with love at the same time nutritionally balanced and visually pleasing making children look forward to 'mini-meal' times.

ideas on 'bento-boxing'

The following tips from our expert panel at Yellow Brick Road Nursery and Crystal Valley Nursery will help your child enjoy mini-meal time every day. Enjoy and happy mini-meal preppin'!

Try freezing yoghurt, making it more like an ice cream type
~ Use biscuit cutters to cut cheese or bread into interesting shape or make smiling face by arranging pieces of fruits on a slice of bread.
Let your child help you prepare 'mini meal' together; allow them to put sliced fruits in containers or let them cut the bread. It gives them a great sense of     fulfillment and knowing they helped prepare it.
Ensure that snacks are easy to pick-up, finger-friendly and bite-sized since they would be feeding themselves especially when they are at the Nursery.
~ Use ice packs and cool bags to keep food fresh.
Be creative and enjoy the process of preparing it.
